Here you will find some helpful advice on purchasing a pontoon boat. If you are thinking about buying a pontoon boat there are a couple of questions that you will need to ask yourself. How many people will I be bringing? How big do I want it? What’s the difference between the boat having 2 pontoons or 3? Can I bring my pontoon boat out into the ocean?
Most motorized pontoon boats come with two cylinder shaped “pontoons” mounted right under the deck, these are the flotation devices and make the boat almost impossible to sink. If you want a pontoon boat that is designed for speed then you should think about investing a little more money and purchasing a boat with 3 pontoons under the deck. This will not make your boat fast alone most of it depends on the engine size of course.
How big of a boat you want to get depends on how many people you will be planning to bring along. For instance 18 footers , you could fit 8-11 people on comfortably, while the bigger sized pontoons, like a 26 footer, you can fit about 15-20 people.
Pontoon boats are mainly designed for traveling in lakes and canals, flats and mostly inland. This is because the bow of the boat isn’t all that big, it doesn’t take a giant wave to crash over the bow, so please take that into consideration. So with all of that being said I would not recommend taking a pontoon boat out into the ocean, or the gulf, especially if the seas are 5 foot or more.
A great way to decide what kind of pontoon boat you might want to invest in is to rent one. Pontoon boats are very popular boats to rent and there are lots of marinas that offer either a full day or half day rental. This way you can get a good feel about how many people and how big of a boat you really need, sure you can ask around or read this article, but the only sure way is to get a bunch of friends or family together and rent a pontoon for a awhile and see how you like it. Pontoon boats can be a big investment so make sure that you do your research, this in my opinion is great research.
