Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management Looking for Pontoon Boat

The Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District is looking for a pontoon boat. Since it’s inception in 1979 the LWWMD has monitored the water quality of the lake. To save money trained volunteers have taken on the task of collecting water samples.

“Many people think that PPL is responsible for keeping check on water quality and pollution within the watershed and particularly Lake Wallenpaupack; it’s actually the Management District that does the testing and hires consultants for evaluation and direction,” said Brian Schan, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

“We used to hire an outside firm to do the physical sampling and testing on nearly a monthly basis,” said Karen Mandeville, District Administrator. “But the board saw a way we could save a lot of money if we did the sampling ourselves and just sent some samples to a lab for the more involved testing. So for the last two years we’ve borrowed a boat from 1st Klas Marina to go to the various stations around the lake to take water samples.

We’re a non-profit agency and depend on donations and grants to do our work and if we can acquire a boat at no cost it would allow us to use that money for testing and for projects within the watershed,” she said. The board says ideally someone may have a newer pontoon boat with a motor in the 20-foot range that they would like to donate to the district.

“The donation is totally tax deductible and if a person, business or corporation would like to sponsor such a boat we’d be happy to put a sign on the boat,” says Schan. “There seems to be a lot of boats that people have not used in years just being stored in area marinas.  If someone would like to help the district continue to do the work that benefits everyone who uses the lake, and if they have a boat they no longer use, we will put it to good use,” he said.
If anyone is interested they can call the LWWMD office at (570) 226-3865.
