Fugawi X-Traverse Adds Navionics Charts Support To Apple iPhone

Toronto-based software manufacturer Northport Systems Inc. announced today that its popular Fugawi X-Traverse online map collection for use with iNavX marine software for the Apple iPhone, now supports award-winning Navionics marine and outdoor charts.
Adding to iNavX’s support of raster maps including NOAA RNC, Swedish Marine Charts, and TRAK Maps, users now have subscription-based, fingertip access to world-wide Navionics Gold+ international marine, HotMaps Premium North American fishing and European Discovery outdoor charts from www.x-traverse.com. Offering enthusiasts renowned marine and outdoor cartography, the map additions feature the unparalleled clarity and detail that are the hallmark of all Navionics digital charts.
Navionics charts are downloaded directly into iNavX software through the iPhone’s internet connection (Edge, 3G or WiFi) and saved locally on the phone for use when outside of cell phone or WiFi internet coverage. With an enabled X-Traverse.com account and a subscription to one or more Navionics regions, iNavX users may view their location on Navionics charts using the iPhone’s integral Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, seamlessly pan and zoom the charts, query objects, plot and navigate waypoints and receive and view GRIB file weather data. Users may also transfer waypoints and saved routes to PC- or Mac-based navigation software such as Fugawi Marine ENC or MacENC. iNavX will also plot AIS vessel traffic when connected by WiFi to a suitable AIS receiver or NMEA data stream.
“Navionics vector charts are a powerful addition to the Fugawi X-Traverse online mapping collection,” said Robin Martel, president of Northport Systems. “iNavX is clearly one of the world’s most advanced marine navigation software products for the iPhone and we are very pleased to be working with iNavX for our launch of Navionics chart support.”
“We will grow the map and chart content on X-Traverse.com and expand partnerships with chart suppliers, software developers and mobile device manufacturers,” continued Martel. “Fugawi X-Traverse users are assured easy access to up-to-date and inexpensive charting data from mobile phones and desktops anywhere and anytime, while providing a robust revenue platform for our data partners.”
The X-Traverse chart and data API is free to qualified mobile application developers. The API allows third party developers to quickly and easily access a growing catalog of maps and charts. A regularly updated list of compatible applications and supported handsets can be accessed on the X-Travers website.

The Loon Solar Powered Pontoon Boat
Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats-Pontoon Parts along with news and views from the boating industry. Here is a product review on a new concept in Pontoon Boats unveiled by Aptera Designs and the Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company.
Sure, it’s just a concept for now, but the Aptera design team (Eleven) has unveiled this solar-powered pontoon boat, and it’s looking pretty decent, so we thought we’d bring a few of the details over here for you.
The Loon, as it’s called, was designed for the Tamarack Lake Electric Boat Company, and it’s got a pontoon boat shape to it, and is relatively lightweight for its size, with a 1000W solar panel roofing which is collapsible for compact storing of the boat when not in the water.
It’s 22 feet long, and is made of recycled materials, bamboo and natural fibers, with an estimated top speed of 7 knots (it should be able to travel about 35 miles a day).
We don’t know when to expect these bad boys on the waterways, nor do we know how much they’re going to cost, but we’re hoping they’re not thousands of dollars. Be sure to check out the cool looking picture of the Loon from the link provided. Used Pontoon Boatsthanks; Aptera designers unveil solar-powered pontoon, the Loon – Engadget

Foul weather gear has the challenging task of keeping active boaters dry from rain, spray and solid water. But, if these were the only requirements, we’d all be wearing simple slickers.
In addition to external water protection, foul weather gear must also offer a wide latitude of ventilation options due to varying exertion levels, must offer freedom of movement for active wearers, must be durable to withstand the marine environment (including rough nonskid surfaces, chemicals and salt), and should be comfortable to live in for extended periods of time.
Now is the perfect time of year for a Foul Weather Gear Sale. West Marine is offering 25% off on top brands from GILL & HENRI LLOYD. Check out all their discount prices on Mens, Womens and Children’s West MarineFoul Weather Gear Sale on Now!

Garmin Fishfinder 160 Mount
I purchased a Garmin Fishfinder 160 off of ebay. It did not come with the mounting bracket and knobs. Garmin no longer has the bracket available.
I was just wondering if maybe someone had the factory bracket and knobs laying around collecting dust. I’m willing to pay a fair price as well as shipping. I really like the Garmin Fishfinder 160, I think it is going to be a great fish finder for me. Thanks.

Fort Worth Boat Show Update

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Used Pontoon Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Here is a Used Pontoon Boat review on the Fort Worth Boat and Sport Show.
FORT WORTH — Boat dealers aren’t exactly buoyant, given the current economy, but consumers who are fishing for a deal may reel one in this weekend.
“It’s a great time for consumers,” said John-Morris Edwards, whose family’s Austin-based Innovation Event Management is organizing the annual Fort Worth Boat and Sport Show, which runs through Sunday. “There are dealers who are wanting to get a bird in the hand. They’re kind of in a pickle.”
The tight economy has hurt boat sales along with other items considered to be luxuries. The sales of virtually every type of boat except jet boats fell in 2007, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. In response, many of the boat-show exhibitors will be featuring the less-expensive versions as well as the top-of-the-line luxury items this year.
Edwards said there are about as many dealers as there were last year, although not as many as in 2006, which he recalled as one of the show’s biggest. “It is a challenge,” said Ben Pigeon, regional sales manager for Tige, a boat builder based in Abilene. “I’m not going to lie to you.”
What you’ll find
The show features about two dozen boat dealers and builders, an equal number of other vendors offering related items such as modular dock systems, and a peddler show with scented candles, jerky and spas. Plenty of new pontoon boats and pontoon parts and accessories available.
The goal is a family show with kid-friendly attractions such as Twiggy, the water-skiing squirrel, who is slated to put on daily shows in a pool in the main exhibit hall. The reclusive rodent, who snoozed before Thursday’s show, hails from Florida and wears a squirrel-size lifejacket when he hits the water. “Twiggy,” Edwards said, “is about water safety.”
The dealers, however, were hustling to prep for the first show of what they hope will be a brisk sales season while the skiing squirrel napped. They’re facing tight credit, leftover ’08 models in some cases and consumers who may be unwilling to buy a big, if admittedly enjoyable, toy. But some of the toys looked mighty enticing.
“GM came to us and said, ‘Build us a Corvette boat,’ ” Waterski America salesman Todd Dundas said, climbing into a shiny blood-red ski boat with a distinctive Corvette-style stern and 505-horsepower V-8 engine. “MSRP: $116,000,” Dundas said. “On sale today for $87,000.”
When they’re not skiing, wakeboarding or surfing behind the vessel, the crew can watch DVDs on the dashboard or swim over to the stereo control panel on the back of the boat and crank up the Rockford Fosgate speakers. “I call it a lake limo,” Dundas said, showing off another bling-encrusted ski boat with room for “16 of your closest friends.”
Making a pitch
A&R Marine of Noble, Okla., is getting its feet wet here for the first time. Its Craig Cat, a compact two-person pontoon boat, costs $7,000 to $11,500. Engines range from 20 to 30 horsepower, with speeds of 20 to 30 mph. There’s also an electric option.
“They’ll run all day on a six-gallon tank of gas,” owner Al Baumgardner said. “One model comes with Sirius satellite radio. “If things go well, we may open a dealership” in North Texas, Baumgardner said. “We’re pretty excited about all this. This is our first boat show.”
Baumgardner stood by Friday afternoon as visitors lined up to ask about the little boats.
“We haven’t sold one, but we will,” he said.
Testing the waters
John and Mary Adamek of Fort Worth were just kicking the pontoons on a 23-footer. He retired from Lockheed last year and is pretty happy with his bass boat. Joe Sawyer, a retired department-store manager, was up from Stephenville with his wife. He was in the market for a sailboat but didn’t see any.
John Christensen, however, was close to taking the bait on a fish-and-ski boat. He owns a Denton computer sales and service company. “I might buy something today or this weekend,” said Christensen, who has a 5-year-old daughter. “My daughter, she’s got a Cinderella fishing pole. I’m hoping that someday I’ll be able to have some family fun taking her skiing.”
His current fishing boat spends more time in the shop than he likes. Now he’s shopping for something he can keep “the rest of my life.” At least, that’s his story. “That’s what I told my wife last time,” Christensen said.
