Safe place to clean toons in the winter?

I went out for a battery charge run today as it was sunny and 70 out. Water temps at my slip are about 67 degrees right now which, for me is a few degrees cooler than I’d like for swimming and cleaning the toons (I’m a stickler about this in the summer).

Anyway, on a whim, I went up a cove where our coal fired steam plant lets out and the water temps were in the high 80s. I tested with my hand and it was toasty.

Is there a health risk swimming in the outlet of a coal-fired plant. I’d only do it once a month during the winter for 15 minutes or so.

Plenty of people swim in the river just downstream from the plant. Your thoughts? Safe?

yamaha f150 outboard, how do i add hydraulic fluid to the power steering? what type fluid is best?

started to notice a little chatter and play in the steering last time out, believe i need to add fluid, just not sure where to put it, or how, or what kind. it is an ‘06 yamaha outboard with yamaha steering.

Check at the steering helm there is a screw on the back take it out and see what color it is if red use ATF if clear use sea/star Hydralic Steering fluid don’t mix them.

Pelican Bayou 160 square stern canoe motor?

I’m thinking about this canoe:
http://www.pelicansport.com/index.php?language=en&category=canoes&nauticalboat=bayou160
It is about $700. It can hand a small motor up to 5 hp, I think.
I’d rather have a smaller motor anyhow…

or at the most powerful…

as weight and cost is a consideration for these 4 strokes.
Any experience with them? How well do they work with this canoe? Which one do you think is best? Thanks.

Buy used if possible. I bought a used Pelican and 4hp Mercury for $650. 4hp really works well. Goes around 12mph and is pretty stable.

Loss of power on evinrude outboard boat motor. Can anyone help?

I had a major loss in power. You can throttle almost half way then it just kind of boggs at the same speed no matter how much gas you give it. I think that the choke is stuck because it is running rich at the plugs and it happened after the choke was hit to many times. The motor is a 65HP 1971 Evinrude. Can anyone give me some advice on what to try to get it back? Thanks!

Give this a try,,,,,, remove the air horn & look into the carbs while someone else is driving the boat. You’ll see fuel coming up outta the main jet. If there’s crap in the float bowl that’s blocked the main jet, ya won’t see the stream of fuel.

Are pontoon boats used only in lakes or can they be used in the ocean too?

My husband wants a pontoon boat, but i think the other kind would be more practical since we live next to the ocean (and the closest lake is an hour away). Any comments/suggestions?

A pontoon boat can be used on the ocean as well as a lake. They are actually quite stable in rough waters (up to a point). However, it starts to get unsafe the further you get from shore. If you plan on taking long trips away from shore, then a pontoon boat is probably not the best thing for you.

So went to the lake today to winterize my boat….

I went down for the first season of putting the boat up for the winter. All I was planning on doing is:

1. Put Stabil Ethonal treatment in the tank.

2. Change lower unit oil.

3. Fog the Carb/Engine

4. Pull the Battery

5. Put tarp over playpen cover.

First thing, changed lower unit fluid. Looked a little dark, but no water. Put Stabil in tank, put ear muffs on moter, started so the Stabil could work through the motor. This is where it gets interesting. Finally got the motor started (it was 38 degrees and she had not ran since Labor Day). After running for a minute, I was not getting any water out of the pee hole. Checked garden hose pressure, it was good. Water was squirting out everywhere and both intake holes were covered. Left running and warm water started coming out of the hub and two holes just above where prop is on each side of the outdrive. The two exhuast holes up high on the motor started to steam a little and water was spitting out of them. Ok, still no pee stream. Then I noticed what looked like grease/water mixture building up inside of the prop around the spindle???? I wiped my finger and it felt like grease but had no odor like grease. First thing I thought was the seal behind the prop went, but lower unit oil looked good with no water in it when I changed it? Plus, this was more solid like grease, not thick honey like lower unit oil. The water coming out of hub never got really hot just warm. Engine was running fine. I fogged the carb, and shut it down. Is it normal for the pee hole not to shoot water when hooked to ear muffs?

Since this outboard deal is new to me this year, is that normal. I cannot beleave that the thing was not getting water, I have used the muffs a thousand times on my sterndrive with no problems.

Sorry for long post..Just a little worried!
