what do you think is the best vintage johnson/evinrude outboard of the 1950s,under 10hp?
as far as geting parts and using on a boat{realabilaty}.im thinking the 3hp or maybe the 5.5hp.what do you think?
They were all knuckle busters and hard to adjust. The pumpkins were adjusted with three adjustments. The throttle timing, and the main jet and the idle adjustment. The main was a "belly button" in the middle of the motor and adjusted with bent wire coming out the bottom of the cowl. The idle was adjusted with a thumb wheel on top right of the starter, Once they were adjusted right you could keep them running with a small turn of the thumb wheel. They sounded really neat and and always drew a crowd, as they would "phist, phist" out the belly button when run just a little lean.
You can get either engine as you will not hardly notice any change in the horsepower. They should be fairly cheap for an antique as they made a zillion of them over the years with hardly a change. Most are missing the lower cover as you had a time finding the main jet when it was in place.
Don't buy an antique for reliability. It's sixty years old. If you want to see one run- rent "The Birds", by Alfred Hitchcock. The girl runs one across Bodaga bay to deliver the love birds.
I have a early 70's Johnson outboard motor. I mixed the fuel/oil ratio with too much oil. Will this hurt it?
I have a early 70's (model 40EL75C) Johnson outboard motor. I mixed the fuel/oil ratio with too much oil (50:1) and ran it about 2 hours that way and it started to miss and stall. Will this hurt anything? How can I fix this myself?
If you have to make a mistake on the ratio you made it in the right direction. Too much oil will not hurt the engine a bit. It may foul the plugs and it may smoke like a freight train and it might even leave some extra oil around the rings or somewhere else. Since it was missing the plugs are almost certainly the problem. I would suggest replacing them and use the correct mixture. Anything you did to the rings or any other parts will soon be washed clean by the leaner mixture.
Happy boating and don't give this a second thought. If your engine dies it is not because of two hours operation with a rich fuel mixture.

What is a 1974 50hp Johnson evinrude outboard engine worth?
It runs good. The paint is faded and the trim where the top cover goes on is rotting. I have a brand new prop on it. I live in northwest part of Ct.
I'd say atleast a couple hundred…..maybe a lil more if it's in good shape. Those are good motors.
Does a different propeller on a 1972 johnson 6hp outboard motor change the speed noticeably?
Does a different propeller on a 1972 johnson 6hp outboard motor change the speed noticeably?
you may not have much in the way of choice,if you go too aggressive you wont troll well or if you go to tame you will troll well but not have any speed for control in wind or current
what is the current pitch and what do you want to go to
