Kingston Boat Show Update

IT’S ALL HANDS ON DECK — FOR THE KINGSTON BOAT SHOW. IT STEERS INTO THE CATARAQUI ARENA THIS WEEKEND. BOATS OF ALL SHAPES, SIZES AND PRICES ARE ON DISPLAY — AND FOR SALE — RANGING FROM 30-DOLLARS TO 300-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

FROM MILD TO WILD, THE KINGSTON BOAT SHOW HAS IT ALL. PADDLE BOATS, POWERBOATS AND ONE’S WITH PLENTY OF HORSEPOWER. 36 VENDORS FROM AROUND SOUTH EASTERN ONTARIO HAVE SET UP SHOP AT THE CATARAQUI ARENA TO SHOW OFF THE LATEST IN NAUTICAL RIDES AND ACCESSORIES.

SEAN HORSFAIL,  “WE HAVE PONTOON BOATS, FISHING BOATS, SKI BOATS, WAKE BOARD BOATS UP TO BIG CRUISERS LIKE 38 FEET.’   BUT NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF CRAFT YOU’RE INTERESTED IN, THERE IS SOME NEW LEGISLATION ON THE BOOKS THAT YOU’LL NEED TO KNOW FIRST.

STARTING IN MID SEPTEMBER, ALL BOAT OPERATORS IN CANADA WILL NEED A “PLEASURE CRAFT LICENSE.” ITS A ONE TIME FEE OF 50 BUCKS AND COULD SAVE YOU A 250 DOLLAR FINE.

CAMERON TAYLOR, “THERE ARE ABOUT 4 MILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT STILL NEED TO GET THEIR CARD AN THERE WILL BE RUSH FOR SEPTEMBER 15TH. SO GO TO BOAT SMART DOT COM TO FIND FREE STUDY MATERIAL AND TAKE THE EXAM ON LINE.”  YOU’LL NEED IT IF YOU GET BEHIND THE HELM OF THIS CUSTOM LAUNCH.

IT MAY LOOK LIKE A WOODEN PIECE OF ART FROM THE 1940′S, BUT IT’S ACTUALLY BRAND NEW AND HAND MADE OUT OF FIBREGLASS. TERRY SMITH,  “WE BASICALLY SELL FACTORY DIRECT, WE ONLY BUILD ONE BOAT A MONTH. AND WE’LL BUILD IT TO WHATEVER COLOUR YOU WANT, NAVY BLUE, BLACK, RED, PINK IF YOU WANT.’

BUT NOT EVERYONE WILL BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE 87 THOUSAND DOLLAR PRICE TAG. ESPECIALLY AT A TIME WHEN EXTRA CASH FOR TOYS LIKE THESE IS HARD TO COME BY.

SEAN, ” AS A WHOLE ACROSS NORTH AMERICA THE BOATING INDUSTRY IS FEELING THAT. WE SEE A LOT LESS 2009′S BEING BUILT THAN ANY OTHER YEAR I CAN REMEMBER. BUT IN OTTAWA, THE CAPITOL REGION AND INTO KINGSTON IT’S MORE ISOLATED AND WE ARE SEEING STRONGER SALES THAN IN 2008.”

AND EVEN IF CASH IS A PROBLEM, SEVERAL BANKS AND LOAN COMPANIES ARE ON HAND, ANXIOUS TO HELP YOU SEAL THE DEAL.

THE BOAT SHOW ISN’T JUST ABOUT SALES.  ITS ALSO A CHANCE FOR THE REST OF US TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND JUST HAVE A LOOK.

AGAIN, THE KINGSTON BOAT SHOW IS AT THE CATARAQUI ARENA…. OPEN UNTIL 8 O’CLOCK TONIGHT … AND ALL-DAY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.  THERE IS A 4-DOLLAR ADMISSION.

Storm Lake State Marina Finally Opens

News out of Storm Lake with the opening of a new marina. The $3 million State Marina in Storm Lake is now finally open for business after some delays set it behind, originally scheduled to open last summer. The new marina opened on April 1. Bob Kelly of Shamrock Boat Sales holds the operator’s contract. Area manager Jeff Ryan says they are still in the process of outfitting the store with life jackets, skis, tubes and other nautical items as well as anchors, props and prop repair.

The Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce is planning to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the marina on May 13.The State Marina includes the new waterfront building that will house a boat showroom and will sell both new and used boats with brands including Lund aluminum and fiberglass fishing boats, Larson pleasure boats and Hurricane deck boats as well as Sanpan and Sweetwater pontoon boats.

The store also features a convenience store as well as a bait shop with a six-foot live bait tank. Individuals will also be able to rent pontoon boats and the marina will offer repair services for all brands of boats and motors. Currently boat repair will be done at the Shamrock Boat Sales in Carnavon as the Storm Lake marina is in the process of setting up a shop. Ryan says they currently have four full-time mechanics in Carnavon and are in the process of hiring a mechanic for Storm Lake. Slip rentals are also available, he says. The site has also been approved to serve as an Iowa fishing and hunting license sales station. Ryan says the marina may also include an indoor/outdoor restaurant in the future but how extensive it would be is still up in the air and says construction of a sit down restaurant won’t happen this year.

He says even part of the building design will make it a little harder to put in a very extensive restaurant. Ryan says they fought to get a liquor license but were not able to. “That will take away from a full service restaurant,” he says. However, he says they are excited to be opened and have already had a fair amount of traffic through the marina. The marina is open during business hours Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Beginning May 15 the marina will be open everyday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information call Ryan at 213-9491 or visit www.shamrockboatsales.com. Michigan Inventor Developes New Pontoon Boat Cover

News out Cement City, Michigan, an inventor has a new idea for a Pontoon Boat Cover. Here is the report.

CEMENT CITY, MI – Inventor Richard Dickerson announces his patent pending invention he calls the Convertible Cover for Pontoon Boats. Inventor Dickerson developed this clever innovation to provide a quicker and more user-friendly method for covering and uncovering pontoon boats.

Boating is a popular pastime for people around the world. While it is enjoyed by many, boat maintenance consumes a great deal of time and money. Much of this time is spent deploying and removing covers on the boat during periods of non-use. Deploying a cover is so time consuming that many boaters actually skip the usage of covers for short periods of time, leading to premature aging of the boat and consequently, decreased value. The Convertible Cover for Pontoon Boats allows for covers to be quickly and easily deployed by one person. The invention’s ease of use encourages owners to use covers, regardless of whether it is for short or longterm storage.

Designed to facilitate the process of covering and uncovering one’s boat, the invention utilizes a circular track system that is mounted to both sides of the fence of a pontoon boat. Sliding supports with three glide wheels each ride along these tracks and match with an equal track on the opposite side of the boat. These supports then hold a canvas or vinyl tarp over the entire length of the boat. Removal of the device is simple; it is simply pushed backwards where all of the supports and the tarp are stored at the rear. To deploy the Convertible Cover for Pontoon Boats, one must simply pull a strap that will lift the tarp into place and automatically cover the entire boat. Much simpler than current boat covering methods, the invention provides a means for boat owners to quickly and effectively protect their boats during storage. “My Convertible Cover for Pontoon Boats is designed to accommodate for various sizes of boats and any type of uprights that might be positioned upon a boat,” adds Inventor Dickerson.

Inventor Richard Dickerson is presently working with The InventSAI Network, LLC in order to commercialize the Convertible Cover for Pontoon Boats. For more information please contact The Development Department at 800-747-3109 about Inventor Richard Dickerson. http://www.InventSAI.com. Spring Shoreline Beautification Cleanup using Pontoon Boats

Shoreline cleanup with the help of Pontoon Boats
Shoreline cleanup with the help of pontoon boats.

The 18th annual Spring Shoreline Beautification Cleanup was on a record pace as volunteers began removing trash and debris with mild weather and near perfect water levels at Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.

After experiencing colder than normal weather and high lake levels in 2008 that limited cleanup opportunities, Adopt-the-Shoreline Volunteers rededicated their efforts this spring to improving Lake of the Ozarks.

Groups scheduled dumpsters and removed debris at near record levels, according to Bryan Vance of AmerenUE. As in past years, volunteers reported that dock flotation materials accounted for most of the debris removed, he said.
This was the first cleanup since AmerenUE’s ban on non-encapsulated dock  foam took effect Dec. 31, 2008.

The spring cleanup began March 15 and continued through Wednesday, although opportunities to volunteer may be available in some areas through May. Vance said with the change to warmer weather and steady lake levels, zone coordinators for this year’s cleanup expected the total amount of trash removed to reach near-record levels compared to past cleanups.

The annual spring cleanup is the largest volunteer effort in the lake area. More than 600 volunteers – representing 60 Adopt-the-Shoreline member groups – are expected to participate in the spring cleanup. There is always a need for more volunteers and boats to make the clean up a success

There’s plenty of work for everyone – cleaning shoreline, transporting waste flotation material and stacking debris for pickup by volunteers with cleanup pontoon boats.

Adopt-the-Shoreline is sponsored by AmerenUE, which provides administrative support, supplies bags, and pays for disposal. The physical cleanup work is performed entirely by volunteers.

The cleanups were the catalyst of AmerenUE’s ban on the use of non-encapsulated foam. It was used for decades as the flotation material of choice on thousands of docks on the lake.

Since its inception, the annual spring cleanup has removed hundreds of tons of dock foam, junk and debris a year from the shoreline. A second cleanup is held in the fall with the Adopt-the-Shoreline groups.

Bargains Boat sales at Detroit Spring Boating Expo

Bargains are beckoning at the Detroit Spring Boating Expo for pontoon boat lovers who have cash to spend, industry dealers say.

Boat sales are down, and watercraft repossessions are on the rise because of difficult economic times in Michigan and across the country.

But dealers say affordable prices are available on a wide range of boats, from small, used watercrafts to new yachts. Inventory left over from the past two years has helped create the deals.

Boating is roughly a $3.9 billion industry in Michigan that employs more than 51,000 people, according to the Michigan Boating Industries Association.

Carol and Lyle Jones of Brighton purchased their first watercraft, a used 24-foot pontoon boat, in January from a marina for $8,000. It was marked down by $1,000.

“We’ve lived near a lake for about 13 years and always wanted one,” Lyle Jones said while looking at accessory items for pontoon boats at the boat show in Novi.

“We knew we could probably get a deal these days, so it came down to a financial decision. If we couldn’t afford it, we would have left it there, because you have to have enough money left over to enjoy a beer on your pontoon boat.”
